5 Business Financial Planning Questions Every Entrepreneur & Business Owner Should Ask

After years of working with business owners, I’ve learned that running a successful business is about much more than watching the bottom line.  The strongest business owners I’ve worked with regularly step back, look at the bigger picture, and ask themselves a few important questions.

Here are five questions I believe every business owner should revisit regularly as part of sound business financial planning:

1. Do I Really Understand My Cash Flow?

A profitable business can still run into trouble if cash isn’t available when it’s needed.  I encourage business owners to look beyond revenue and ask: Where is my cash coming from, where is it going, when is it coming and going, and what do the next few months look like?

Understanding small business cash flow management can help you make better decisions before a challenge becomes a real problem.

2. Do I Have Enough Liquidity for the Unexpected?

Every business has surprises.  An unexpected expense, a slower season, an opportunity that comes along at the right time – any of these could show up without notice.  Having adequate liquidity gives you flexibility when that happens.

I’ve found that business owners who plan for the unexpected tend to make decisions with a lot more confidence because they are free to act strategically and aren’t forced to react when something changes.

3. Am I Prepared for My Next Stage of Growth?

Growth is exciting, but it also requires planning.  Hiring employees, purchasing equipment, expanding the location, or taking on a larger project can all put additional demands on a business.

Ask yourself: If the right opportunity came along tomorrow, would my business be financially and operationally ready to take advantage of it?  If not, how can you get started planning for this today so that you are prepared for that opportunity tomorrow?

4. Does My Business Banking Strategy Support Where I’m Going?

Your banking needs should evolve as your business does.  What worked when you started the company may not be the best approach today.

It’s worth periodically reviewing your accounts, cash management, borrowing needs, payment processes, and overall financial structure to make sure they still align with your goals.  Your business banker can help you think through these and may be able to offer helpful guidance.

5. Am I Thinking About the Next Five Years and Not Just the Next Five Months?

This is probably the question I would encourage business owners to spend the most time on.

It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day demands of running a business.  But taking time to think about where you want the business to be years from now can change the decisions you make today. That is what long-term small business financial planning looks like.

In Closing

The best financial conversations I’ve had with business owners aren’t about selling a product.  They’re about understanding the business, listening to what the owner is trying to accomplish, and helping them think through the decisions in front of them.

My biggest piece of advice is simple.  Don’t wait until you need help to start the conversation.  Take the time to evaluate your business financial health while things are going well.  It can make all the difference when the next opportunity or challenge comes along.
