Allentown H.S. Student-Athlete Wins 2026 Strength Award Scholarship from Kearny Bank, Presented in Conjunction with NJSIAA

ALLENTOWN, NJ - In the remote woodlands of New York State, far from help, Savannah Barry’s life abruptly changed. It was March 2025 and the Allentown High School student-athlete was out riding her snowmobile when the vehicle flipped over and crushed her L2 vertebrae.

She was stranded and alone, with a potentially catastrophic spinal injury.

What followed was a convergence of luck, resilience, and extraordinary determination – the latter two being qualities that have earned Barry recognition as the 2026 winner of Kearny Bank’s annual Strength Award scholarship. Presented in conjunction with the NJSIAA (New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association), this $2,500 scholarship honors a New Jersey scholastic athlete who perseveres to overcome significant injury or illness and returns to competition.

As for the luck, that arrived in the form of some vacationing first responders. Purely by chance, they came upon Barry shortly after the accident and recognized the severity of her injuries. Preventing her from causing further damage by moving, they were able to reach emergency services despite being in an area where cell service was notoriously spotty. Barry was eventually transported to a hospital in Utica, where scans revealed her crushed vertebrae was dangerously close to her spinal cord.

Even in those early moments, Barry’s focus was striking. Those who were with her recall that she spoke about softball tryouts – scheduled just two days later – and the impact her injury would have on her season.

An urgent, 100-mile transfer east to Albany Medical Center came next and doctors there determined surgery was imperative. The procedure, which involved stabilizing her spine with two rods and six screws, marked the beginning of a long, uncertain recovery. For weeks, Barry was confined to a back brace and limited to minimal movement, relying on others for even the most basic tasks.

“Everything shifted overnight,” Barry recalls. “What I’d been working so hard for suddenly felt out of reach.”

Doctors quickly confirmed she would miss both her school and travel softball seasons. Determined to remain connected, Barry stayed engaged with her teammates and the sport she loves from the dugout. Her recovery progressed and by late spring she was cleared for the sports-specific rehabilitation that would rebuild her strength.

“It was slow and, at times, really frustrating,” she recalls. “Sometimes I really wasn’t sure I’d be able to get all the way back.”

But as spring turned into summer and then summer turned into fall and the new, 2025-’26 school year, Barry’s outlook brightened. She made her first foray back to the softball field and, as the winter season began, was cleared to play on her school’s basketball team. There were setbacks – particularly periods of pain that required careful management – but she learned quickly when to push through and when to be careful and step back.

“Savannah never lost sight of who she is as a person and an athlete,” says Allentown High School Director of Athletics Dennis Carey, who notes that Barry’s commitment to her goals was unwavering. “Even at the very lowest points, she stayed focused on coming back.”

Ultimately, Barry came all the way back. This spring, as a sophomore – only a year after a crushed vertebra was, in one doctor’s words, “kissing” her spinal cord – she played 20 varsity softball games, batting .355 and collecting 29 hits.

“Savannah has refused to let struggles define her future,” Carey adds. “Actually, I’d say they’re now the foundation that will carry her into whatever adventure she takes on next.”
